Movement as Complement to Massage
As well as dealing with unwanted symptoms through massage I like to show my customers some movement exercises they can do in their own time which will help make the benefits of their massage more enduring. My background in both Western and Easters physical movement practices such as Pilates, Yoga and Fitness mean that I can suggest a range of movement exercises that will blend nicely with the massage therapy you have chosen.
Forms of Movement Exercise
- Pilates is a system of engaging and developing strength and flexibility by using the small muscles which lie deeper in the body. Emphasis is placed on control and precise execution. It complements massage very well as both are designed to increase circulation and promote flexibility and range of motion. Combining massage with a few simple movement exercises is the ideal way to make the benefits of massage something you experience on a daily basis. As a package, they are a route to robust physical health and mental wellbeing.
- Yoga is a spiritual, physical and mental discipline with it’s origins in ancient India. It can help bring focus, concentration and relaxationn, as well as tone and stretch muscles allowing the practitioner to experience life from a different perspective. Recent research has proven it to be a superior form of exercise for enhancing mood, and studies at the University of Miami School of Medicine prove its efficacy – when combine with massage – is reducing prenatal depression and prematurity. With clients I often use elements of Prananyama (breathing exercises) and Asana (physical postures).
- Alignment exercises are linked to western medicine and can be used to alleviate tension by strengthening opposing muscles. This will allow pain free-movement for people suffering from chronic pain or from injuries, and is a great way to engrain the beneficial effects of massage. They not only work as a treatment in themselves, but are a preventative measure against recurring problems.
All of these movement disciplines are designed to help you make the most of your session. They function as a kind of on-going self-treatment, the best approximation of a self-massage. Over time they are proven to enhance performance, and to maintain physical health. As every client is different, I’m careful to provide exercises specifically suited to their body and lifestyle.
